Myofascial Release and Physical Therapy
Myofascial Release and Physical Therapy
Myofascial Release and Physical Therapy are “Better Than Massage” for chronic pain.
With over 28 years of experience as a Physical Therapist, I have developed knowledge in all kinds of approaches for pain relief and Myofascial Release is just one of the approaches I incorporate into my treatments. I am the only John F Barnes Myofascial Release practitioner on the beach and within 45 minutes. This approach is the most beneficial to the fascial system and has been in the process of being developed since the 1970’s. It helps restore function in people with chronic pain, whether that be function in golf, pickleball, cycling, household chores, job requirements, or whatever your pain is preventing you from being your best. Its even been known to lower blood pressure and other health issues.
I offer mostly hands-on individual treatments but with my extensive experience in out-patient orthopedic clinics, I can give appropriate exercise suggestions to manage your symptoms and aren’t your usual “ok, do 20, let me know when you’re done.”
Have you already been to traditional physical therapy but still have pain preventing you from being your best?

Fascia is a water and collagen based connective tissue that literally attaches to every cell in your body is considered an “extra-cellular matrix” in a three-dimensional web throughout your body. When restrictions, adhesions, or what we perceive as “tightness or pain” occurs, the fascia loses its water base and this solidification process can act as a straight jacket choking off nerves, blood supply, muscles, organs, and joints. These fascial restrictions cannot be seen on X-ray, MRI, CAT scans, or any other diagnostic test, and may be what is creating your pain, tingling, tightness, aching, numbness, or however you describe your symptoms.
A typical massage “kneads the dough” of your muscles and outer layers of tissue, but Myofascial Release “stretches the taffy” of the extra-cellular matrix that attaches to every cell of your body at every depth. Myofascial release incorporates piezoelectricity (the electricity that accumulates in solid materials such as biological matter such as bone, DNA, tissue that responds to pressure), mechanotransduction (the mechanism by which cells convert mechanical stimuli into cellular responses such as biochemical or hormonal changes), and phase transition (in this case transforming the solid restriction of the fascial system back into the natural state of the water based ground substance of the fascial system).
The viscoelastic (a substance exhibiting both elastic and viscous behavior when deformed) quality of the fascial system causes it to resist a sudden applied force and explains why other myofascial techniques that force the system are not effective. The John F Barnes technique applies sustained pressure to the fascial system incorporating a time element to allow the water content to be restored to the fascia, thus elongating the elastic properties of the tissue.
You will book at least an hour appointment and get the full 60 minutes, instead of the “50 minute hour” of most massages. You may even choose to book a 2 hour session.

To take advantage of the piezoelectric effect of touch I make contact with your skin. I respect your personal boundaries with draping from sheets, towels, blankets, etc, but ask that you wear something like tank tops, bras, underwear, loose fitting boxer or running shorts so that I may be able to access creases, joints, muscle attachments, etc.
Myofascial release is typically a gentle technique but can at times cause discomfort. I may temporarily “hurt” you, but I will never “harm” you. Being patient and allowing the fascia to release when it’s ready to release will never harm you! The memory of pain, and events that led to the pain may even be trapped within your fascial system which explains the emotional releases that may occur during your session. I will provide a safe and caring environment during what may be a physical release involving uncontrollable body movements, or emotional releases of trapped unconscious memories.

You can book appointments without a doctor’s referral and come in when your body needs the care by paying privately, or even submitting the invoices to your insurance for reimbursement. I even offer intensive programs up to 20 hours a week that are all about you!
If you prefer the usual 2x/week x4 weeks of therapy, I can bill your insurance with a doctor’s referral.
I have been a physical therapist for over 28 years. I originally learned Muscle Energy Techniques, then trained with the International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine, specializing in 3-dimensional joint mechanics and working not only with the general population with injuries and surgeries, but also with athletes of all ages and all levels from high school, college, to professional cyclists, Ironman triathletes and Olympic athletes. I have always had a hands on approach to therapy believing that touch can restore the body’s natural movement patterns through soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization, and also guiding proper therapeutic exercise patterns. I have an interest in learning and my multi-faceted resume of continuing education courses allows a unique approach to your symptoms. I was introduced to John Barnes’ myofascial release in 2006 and have since taken many of his continuing education courses. Having experienced many surgeries and injuries myself, I have combined my knowledge of biomechanical movement patterns with myofascial techniques that greatly benefit chronic pain sufferers. “Practicing what I preach” allows me to continue to enjoy bicycling events of up to 112 miles, paddle boarding, yoga, and even lifting disabled bodies in a skilled nursing home setting part-time. I meditate every morning in the strive to become my best self.
